Game plan · Mid
Prepare the ground, then make them cross it
Plan overview
Anivia’s whole-game plan is to convert mana, wave control, and terrain into forced movement. Early, farm and trade around Q and the doubled E condition while crashing before every recall or move. Mid, use the 14:00 transition to catch side waves, then arrive 60–90 seconds before objectives so R and W shape the entrances. Late, make every choke, siege, and base approach a controlled zone rather than a chase. When ahead, deny routes and turn enemy displacement into towers or objectives; when behind, clear waves, preserve Q/W for engage, and trade objectives when your team lacks numbers or vision. Rebirth rewards a team that can protect the egg, so do not spend the reset as permission to start an isolated fight.
Plan by phase
Build a safe first rotation
0:00–about 14:00, or until first towers and lane assignments begin changing
From the first wave until the first tower or plate pressure shifts, prioritize last hits, mana discipline, and a wave state that lets you act. If the opponent must walk up, threaten Q and use E only when its doubled-damage condition is active; if Q misses or you are outnumbered, disengage rather than forcing a second spell. Crash before recalling or moving. When ahead, hold a freeze only if you can contest the break; when behind, clear safely and preserve health for the next reset instead of defending every minion.
Game situations
Lane
Trade around Q threat, not on cooldown
If the first waves can be cleared without exposing you to an all-in and the enemy mid must last-hit, use Q threat and E trades around their CS, then keep enough mana to control the next wave. If the enemy has a stronger early engage or your Q misses, stop extending the trade and prioritize a clean crash or safe farm. Your lane goal is not constant damage; it is reaching a wave state where R and W can control the next move.
With Anivia
If Anivia is holding mid priority, use her crash as your signal to move with her toward river or an invade. Her roam is most reliable when the wave is already under the enemy tower and the play is visible, so do not ask her to abandon an uncrashed wave for a speculative fight.
If you are the frontline or engager, enter only after Anivia has a usable angle for R and W. Draw enemies toward the zone rather than dragging the fight away from it; once Q lands or the storm is fully formed on a target, help her finish the E window instead of splitting damage across distant targets.
If Anivia is playing behind you during a teamfight, protect the space around her rather than expecting her to start from open ground. When she takes fatal damage and becomes an egg, peel the enemy away if your health and cooldowns allow; if that room cannot be made, disengage instead of donating a second kill.
If your team is setting up dragon, Herald, or Baron, push nearby waves and arrive with Anivia before spawn. She provides more value when the entrances are already known and narrow, so use her wall and storm to hold the approach while the jungler maintains Smite discipline and the damage dealers hit only when the numbers are favorable.
If Anivia is behind, give her safe mid-wave access and do not take a 50/50 fight simply because her R can clear the pit area. A stable wave and a pick on an enemy entering fog give her time to scale; an unprepared five-on-five removes the terrain advantage that makes her useful.
Identity, strengths and limits
Anivia — make the path itself dangerous
MID · BATTLEMAGE / TERRAIN CONTROL
Anivia is a mana-based battlemage who wins by turning a small area into a slow, damaging zone that the enemy cannot cross comfortably. Glacial Storm controls the ground, Flash Frost supplies a stun, Frostbite rewards a recent Q hit or damage from a fully formed storm, and Crystallize can close or divide the remaining route. Rebirth changes fatal damage into a second positioning test: the fight is only valuable if your team can create room for the egg. She is not an assassin who should hunt isolated targets through open fog, nor a frontliner who can spend every control spell to start fights. Her value comes from prepared waves, narrow entrances, sustained damage, and disciplined mana use.
Strengths
Sustained area control around waves, chokes, and objectives
W can block movement and reshape the fight’s geometry
Q offers stun threat while E rewards correct spell sequencing
R clears waves and makes narrow entrances costly
Rebirth can change the value of a seemingly losing exchange when allies create space
Limits and risks
Forcing fights in open space before R or Q is available
Using W without a clear escape, isolation, or zone purpose
Roaming before a crash and donating mid waves for a low-certainty play
Entering objective fog first when your team lacks numbers or vision
Treating Rebirth as a reason to overextend after taking fatal damage
One idea for your next game
For the next game, judge every move by one question: can you make the enemy enter your Glacial Storm area while your Q, W, and team follow-up are available? Crash the wave before leaving mid, arrive early to objective entrances, and preserve one control spell for the enemy’s response. Anivia wins through prepared space, not through chasing targets across open ground.
