Plan overview

Vel'Koz's whole-game plan is to make the enemy cross dangerous space, then convert repeated hits into Organic Deconstruction and controlled artillery damage. Early, trade when an opponent walks for CS, respect level and jungle windows, and crash before recalling or roaming. In mid game, attach movement to the next objective: push a wave, arrive early enough to sweep the entrances, and hold E for the approach. Ahead, use range, fog control, and picks to take structures or neutrals rather than chasing kills. Behind, clear from range, protect the player who still scales, and trade the opposite side when the objective setup cannot be won. In late fights, distinguish the confirmed three-stack passive burst from the separate Research condition for R; preserve your angle and channel only when the Research state is established or the team has made the channel difficult to punish.

From spawn through the end of lane pressure, protect your mana and build a repeatable trade pattern. Use Q when an enemy walks toward a last-hit, W to damage the wave and threaten the follow-up zone, and E when the enemy's movement is predictable or your ADC can act immediately. Track the level-2 race and enemy jungler appearances; if your wave is pushed and the jungler is unseen, stop extending. Crash before a recall or roam. When ahead, use the threat of Q and E to deny space and help your ADC take plates; when behind, prioritize safe XP, short poke, and a wave state that keeps you away from an all-in.

Lane

Trade around a walk-up, not on cooldown autopilot

If the enemy bot lane must walk up for the next minion wave and your ADC is in range, hold E or Q for the moment they commit, then layer the other spell only when the first hit creates a reliable follow-up. If your wave is pushing and the enemy jungler is unseen, keep the trade short and leave before the lane becomes a long corridor for a gank.

With Vel'Koz

Play around Vel'Koz's setup, not ahead of it. If he has Q or E available and the enemy must walk through a choke, approach together and let his first hit define the target. If he lands E or slows a reachable champion, add damage immediately; do not assume the pick will remain available after the enemy escapes.
Give him a stable backline and a clear escape route. If an assassin or diver enters, peel the entry before chasing the enemy frontline, because Vel'Koz needs time to stack Organic Deconstruction and channel. If he is forced to reposition or face-check, his range advantage disappears, so tanks and wardens should establish the line before he spends his control.
Use his wave and objective pressure to create real map gains. If bot or mid can crash a wave before dragon, Void Grubs, Rift Herald, or Baron setup, move with him to sweep and hold the entrances; his spells are more valuable when enemies must enter vision-controlled space. If he lands poke or a pick, turn the resulting numbers advantage into a tower, neutral objective, or pushed wave instead of pursuing a low-value survivor.
Do not treat three Organic Deconstruction stacks as a guaranteed setup for his beam unless the game's Research state is separately confirmed. If Vel'Koz has a Research-enabled target and a safe channel line, help keep that target in range; otherwise, provide peel and space so he can use Q, W, and E to create the next opportunity instead of forcing R.

Vel'Koz is a long-range artillery support who wins by controlling approach paths, layering repeated ability hits, and triggering Organic Deconstruction after three ability-hit stacks for a burst of true damage. Q provides a slowing poke angle, W supplies two-stage area damage, E creates a knock-up or displacement window, and R follows the cursor during a channel; the kit specifies true damage against enemy champions affected by Research. The supplied kit does not establish that three Organic Deconstruction stacks apply Research, so treat those as separate mechanics. Vel'Koz is not a frontliner, an assassin, or a support who can start every fight alone. His value rises when enemies must enter a narrow route, walk up to a wave, or remain near an objective, and falls when he is forced to face-check, fight at point-blank range, or channel without protection.

One idea for your next game

For the next game, separate the two confirmed rewards in your decision-making: three Organic Deconstruction stacks trigger their own true-damage burst, while Life Form Disintegration Ray deals true damage only to a Research-enabled champion. In lane, use short trades around enemy last-hits; before objectives, arrive with the wave and vision prepared; in fights, hold E for the entry and channel R only when the target's Research state is visibly or reliably established and the beam is hard to punish.

Champion lore

It is unclear if Vel'Koz was the first Void-spawn to emerge on Runeterra, but there has certainly never been another to match his level of cruel, calculating sentience. While his kin devour or defile everything around them, he seeks instead to scrutinize and study the physical realm—and the strange, warlike beings that dwell there—for any weakness the Void might exploit. But Vel'Koz is far from a passive observer, striking back at threats with deadly plasma, or by disrupting the very fabric of the world itself.
