Vex periodically becomes empowered, causing her next basic Ability to fear enemies and interrupt dashes. Whenever a nearby enemy dashes, Vex applies a mark that can be consumed for bonus damage that also reduces the cooldown of her empowered state.

Crash, mark the window, and make every entry pay for itself

Plan overview

In lane, farm for reliable burst while shaping crashes that give you permission to move. Your key question is whether Doom 'n Gloom is empowered: if yes, protect the fear for a meaningful trade, anti-dash punish, or gank; if no, use the safer spell pattern to collect the wave and wait for nearby enemy movement to rebuild the threat. After laning, schedule each move around a crashed wave and the next objective's 60–90 second setup. If ahead, take river control, create picks, and turn them into towers or objectives rather than repeating low-risk kills. If behind, clear from range, concede fights without numbers or vision, and use E, fear, and the threat of R to punish an isolated enemy. In teamfights, enter only when the marked target and your landing support make the recast favorable; otherwise play as a backline burst mage and protect the next cooldown window.

Build a safe first rotation

0:00–14:00, especially before the first dragon at 5:00 and Grubs at 8:00

Farm and establish a wave state that lets you act without abandoning income. If Vex has priority, respect her empowered-state threat and use Q for safe damage rather than forcing W range; if you have a clear push advantage, crash before checking river or a visible fight. Her first useful map transition comes from a crashed wave, not from leaving mid on an even wave. Track enemy dashes: each nearby dash can create a marked target and shorten the path back to your empowered state, so do not spend that resource on low-value poke when a real trade or gank is approaching.

Trade around her empowered state, not her mana bar

If the first waves are even and Vex has Q and E available, use short trades when she walks up for a last hit, then disengage before her shield-and-damage W can turn the exchange. If her empowered state is ready, respect the fear during the level 2–3 contest and give up a low-value minion rather than losing health before the next wave.

With Vex

If you are playing frontline, show Vex the target and keep the first enemy within her Q, E, or W range without demanding that she start blind. When her empowered state is ready, your controlled engage can give her a reliable fear target; when it is down, do not force her to compensate by entering alone.
If you are a jungler or support, move after Vex crashes the wave and approach through vision she can use. A nearby enemy dash can give her a marked target, but low-elo plays should not depend on perfect coordination: gank when the enemy is already visible and Vex is within one screen.
If Vex marks a target with R, help her judge the landing rather than automatically following the recast. If the enemy carry is isolated and your team is close, cover the arrival; if the target is baiting inside a prepared formation, hold peel and let Vex keep the threat instead of turning a mark into a donation.
If your team is setting up dragon, Grubs, Herald, or Baron, give Vex the time to crash mid and arrive before the pit starts. Sweep and ward 60–90 seconds before spawn so her fear, E zone, and R threat control an entrance rather than being spent while your team face-checks.

Identity, strengths and limits

Vex is a burst mage who wins by controlling approach angles, punishing dashes, and converting one accurate spell hit into a feared target and a full rotation. Doom 'n Gloom is the load-bearing mechanic: her periodic empowered state makes the next basic ability fear enemies and interrupt dashes, while nearby enemy dashes apply marks that can be consumed for bonus damage and reduce the empowered-state cooldown. R is a conditional entry tool: Shadow Surge marks a champion, then lets Vex recast into them, so the reward is access to a vulnerable target and the risk is landing inside the enemy's response range. She is not a frontliner, sustained DPS mage, or free engage button; she needs a readable target, mana, cooldowns, and a landing window.

Strengths

Limits and risks

Forcing W trades into a full enemy wave or while Vex's empowered fear is ready.
Using R as first contact when the marked target is protected and Vex will land alone.
Roaming from an uncrashed wave and losing the XP, gold, and priority that enable the play.
Spending E and fear for poke immediately before an objective setup, leaving no control tool for the choke.
Starting Baron or a river fight without 60–90 seconds of wave and vision preparation.

One idea for your next game

For the next game, make Vex's empowered state your visible timer. Before every trade, roam, and objective entry, ask whether the next basic ability can fear and interrupt a dash. If it can, thin the wave or wait; if it has been spent, use that cooldown window to crash, move, or force space. This single check prevents both reckless engages and passive surrender of priority.
