Secure the wave without donating the lane

Opening lane through the first recall and cannon-wave crash; use the first waves to test whether contesting costs health

Treat the first waves as both income and a safety test. If your duo can push without losing health, use the level-2 race and Q access to secure last hits and punish enemies who walk up. If the matchup contests your range or all-in, prioritize XP, cannon minions and a crash before recalling. Build stacks through safe ability hits and Super Scorcher Breath takedowns, but do not spend mana on trades that do not protect the wave or create a recall. Your transition is a clean crash into a reset, not a forced kill.

Lane

Turn his stack economy into a lane choice

If the first waves are contestable and your duo can hit level 2 first, push the opening waves while tracking Smolder's position for Q access; then threaten a short trade when he walks for a last hit. If your duo loses the race, concede exposed minions and preserve health until the wave returns toward your side.

With Smolder

• If Smolder is your marksman, shape the lane around his stacking window: help him reach the wave safely, avoid random autos that break a freeze or pull minion aggro, and create a crash before a roam. If the enemy threatens level 2 first, stand between Smolder and the engage path so he can take XP without donating health.
• When moving toward dragon or another objective, push the nearby bot wave first and reset together if possible. Smolder needs mana, health and access to his abilities; arriving late or staggered turns his scaling damage into a fight he cannot sustain. If the enemy commits while he is collecting a crashed wave, take the cross-map payment only when it is reachable without abandoning the rest of the team.
• In teamfights, give Smolder a clear front-to-back firing lane rather than asking him to enter first. If an enemy diver crosses the frontline, peel it with the tools available and let Smolder damage the nearest safe target. His E can reposition, but treating it as a guaranteed escape encourages the team to leave him without protection.
• After Smolder's team wins a fight, help him convert the death timers into a tower, inhibitor, objective or pushed wave. If no conversion is safe, reset together and set the next wave or objective instead of chasing. His value grows when the team banks the map resources created by his damage.
